Colour & Composition
I listened to each of the albums while thumbnailing my ideas. I tried to sketch out my thoughts roughly, developing my ideas until I got to a point I was happy with.

I struggled at first with the type compositions. My first ideas felt overly busy and complicated, without actually saying much as an image. I tried to limit myself to fewer letter forms and colours to create more concise images.
Bodoni – feminine
Rockwell – power
Helvetica – masculine
Clarendon – pattern
Calibri – scale
Myriad Pro – playful

Under The Influence
Anne Yvonne Gilbert

Charles Keeping
I was most interested in Keeping’s mark-making. I love how he used wax resist to create patterns and texture. I also like how he scratches away to reveal the paper beneath, creating fine details.

Brad Holland

I chose to use Anne Yvonne Gilbert’s style for my psychological horror book cover, Charles Keeping for the children’s book, and Brad Holland for the science fiction.
I struggled to get an accurate scan of the colours for my Charles Keeping and Brad Holland covers, so I tried to edit the scans to better represent the paints used.

Telling Stories
I chose the song ‘Les Fleurs’ by Minnie Riperton. I wanted my story to represent self expression and acceptance, embracing femininity as something empowering.

I received feedback that I didn’t take full advantage of the colours of flowers, so I worked into my illustrations with more colour. I also changed the colour of text and added stroke to be more readable. I’m still not completely satisfied with the text, as it feels a bit disjointed, but I do think it’s an improvement.
